Currently living in China, Cui makes complex oil paintings that hover between representation and abstraction. His dreamy narrative scenes at times reference the grandeur of historical painting with dynamic compositions of horses and soldiers. Other pictures are quiet and domestic with subjects depicted in intimate interactions. Cui is currently focused on the working class and how an individual can be persecuted while still contributing to persecution at large. His narratives feature this paradoxical aspect of human behavior leaving conclusions and judgments open to interpretation.
